During the hearing of an indictable case at the (iisborne Police. Court a man who had been brought in from the llotu to give evidence was reported by Detective Madder.i i■ ■■ have been drinking. His Worship said lie would certainly not hear a witness if there was tlie slightest suspicion of liquor about him. It was unfair to the prisoner that a person should! g-ve evidence when not in his right mind. The witness was ordered to stand forward, and negotiated the intervening space with a good deal of difliculty. "\Vliy. the man is positively drunk;' remarked the "Magistrate. "I'm liot drunk," protested the witness. His Wordiip said Ihe man was guilty of contempt i»f Court ill attending in a drunken state. He ordered him to lie locked up until he was in a fit condition to » ve his evidence.
