This shows what attention can do. WAREA. A number of calves were inoculate! at Mrs Judge's yard on Wednesday by Air Brittain, Stock Inspector. A largo mob of fat bullocks passed through here the 'other day for the Waitara freezing works. They came from the Waimate Plains. Mr Joseph Lawn is proceeding with his slaughter yards, having most of the concrete work finished and the boiling-down and other arrangementnear coinpletiou. One of the fanners here has decided to instal a milking machine for next season. The levels were taken the other day for a water race by llr Porteous, and proved very satisfactory, it being found that there was enough water to drive two machines or more and it could be harnessed with very little trouble. OKATO. At a general meeting of the Okaio Hibernian Sports Club, the officers and committee of the club were duly elected as follows:—President, Mr J. S. Fox; vice-presidents, Rev. Father Cognet, 11. Kothcry, T. Doyle, junr., T. Doyle, senr., W. Staite, Mrs little, X. King, Dr Walker, Dr Home, (;. Andrews, P. O'Siillivan, C. Arden, J. Duggun, Oil), (t'ibbons, J. Lawn, Jiimgi, U. AUwood, Ilinty. A strong eommilUe was appointed, of which A. Richards was elected chairman, W. ,1. Jloyce lion, sec., and D. S. Fox treasurer. It was 'decided to hold the Sports in -Mr T. Doyle's paddock 011 Tue-dav, j April 9th. This permission was oniv granted by Mr Doyle oil condition that Ihe committee keep a strict watch upon people carelessly leaving glass bottles about the paddocks, as two years a"u Air Doyle had a valuable horse injured through carelessness of this kind. The programme of events will be advertised at a later date. On Monday, March 4th, a sa:e of produae left over ii'oui the hawest thanksgiving iu connection with the Ohurch of England, was held in the Hempton Hall. For the first hour the Itev. FHrcr entertained the audience with lantern slides of the sights of London. For the next hour and a half Mr Boyce was called upon ito auction the product', which brought, satisfactory price;. After the auction refreshments were handed round, and the proceedings terminated with a short dance.
One of the most pleasant gatherings that lias been held here for a longtime took place in the Ilempton Uaii on Ihursday evening, 28th February, when a farewell social was tendered Miss Potts on the eve of her departure from the Okato school to t.ike up a position on the staff of the West lOnd school. By 6.30 'clock, the h-i'l was crowded with school cluldr ta, their parents, awl the outside public. l>'or the first hour and a half children's games and dances were indulged in. Attenvards the adult dancers tripped it merrily till 11 p.m., when supper was handed round. Immediately nfman of the school coinmitte, in a few sensible and well-chosen remarks, referred to the spontaneous enthusiasm that had brought such a crowd together I.o_ bid farewell to Miss Potts.' lie said that as chairman of the committee he knew for a fact that Miss Potts waa one of the best teachers in the service, and that never once fining Ill's term of ollice had he had a single complaint iigainst tojrj '-'and th'V.V said Mr Andrews, "us saying a great deal for Okato." He referred to the loss of Miss Potts' services in matters outside school affairs, and in saying good-bye and wishing her success and happiness asked her to accept a handsome travelling bag as a token of goodwill from the parents and publ'c ot Okato. Messrs W. J. Gray and W.
li. Robinson also spoke in eulogistic terms of other phases o.f Miss Potts' work. After these gentlemen had finished. Miss Kate Eustace, on behalf in' tlie school children, expressed in | sympathetic terms the sense of loss felt by the children at losing one who bad been so kind to them, and one who had done so much for their welfare. In remembiance of the happy days spout with the Okato children, Miss Potts was then presented with a crescent-shaped gold brooch set witli rubies and pearls. Mr Boyce, in replying on behalf of Miss Potts, said that he would rather have spoken on tho other side than have to reply, as he, before everyone else, had been in a position to know how faithful had i-een .Miss foils' service, and how hard she had worked for all that pertained to the welfare, of the school and the community. He said that Miss Pol Is felt, somewhat overwhelmed by the kindly expressions and valuable tokens
