THE ELTHAM PICNIC.
To The Editor. Sir,—A local appearing in your is•Mif <'i the Bth is very misleading, inasmuch as it would apjKjar that a ven <!.'(•!■! \[ division had occurred over the of declaring a iiol day for the local school picnic. You state "KlInjun divided against i | self ju.it now I i'ud the cause of the I rouble is the J lilim; of the Tradesmen's Association i'» d'-eiiue a holiday for tlie seaside ' e.U'iii'Mon." As a matter of fact the .School Committee wrote asking the Association to observe a full holiday on the occasion of the school picnic. r Uter due consideration by the executive of the Association a reply was Vent stating that, the Association did not think it wouhl l>« of any great benefit, were the shops to close, but they would assist the conunulee as lunch a> possible by allowing any assistants to go who so desired. An attempt to gei a petition signed ask- 1 ing the Association to re-cousder the decision has failed, thus showing the strength of the- Imaginary "ho.iday party" who "expect to work the oracle
next year." I have vet to learn that members of the Association are dissatistied with the decision of their executive 011 this matter. Aly reason for writ ng is to remove any impression us to 1 lie division in the Association, Aviiich is now working as sal is factorily, if not more so, than at any time since formation. —I am. etc., Jl. <!. ('A K.MAX, President I'ilthain Tradesmen's Association. [We regret that what appears to us a perfectly innocent aud harmless pa Sagiraph should have been takeji so | seriously by the liiltliani Tradesmen's Association. Itcmcnibering that 011 the occasion of the lute Stratford picnic, adults were present in hundred* with the children at the seaside, the comparative dearth of liltham parents i't the picnic on Thursday prompted our reporter to inquire the wherefore, and the answer elicited in a dozen instances at least was that, the Tradesmen's Association had not declared a holiday, but it was hoped to have a united outing 011 the next occasion. And nothing more than that, information, so far as wo can see, is conveyed :n the paragraph to which exception / has been taken. We have been obliged "to excise ccrUiiu personal .rel'e.r- ---[ ences from the above letter, piirticu- . larly as they are 110 concern of our.and had nothing whatever to do witl our sources of information.—Kditoi "News."]
