SECOND TEST MATCH. M.C.C. v. NEW ZEALAND. Per Press Association. Willinuton, March 8. On the Basin Reserve, the second test match between M CO. aud New Zealand began in fine weather, and during the alternoon there were about 4000 people present. Simpson-Hay-ward and Tufnell stand out of the visiting team. The wicket was showing signs of the season's wear and bumped badly at times. The New! Zealand captain, Williams, won the toss and went in. Scoring was slow, and for the lirst couple of hours en y ill runs were put on. Sale played the best innings on his side, showing good defence, «lth excellent punishing powers at any loose stuff that was sent. After lunch, the rate of scoring improved somewhat, but before long relapsed again into tameness. The New Zcalanders batted for 3 hours and 5 minutes, and the rate of scoring was just a shade ever 50 per hour. The Englishmen began their first essay at ■1 o'clock, and opened badly, losing the (irat 3 wickets for 50, the fourth at 78, and the sth for 80, vhen slumps were drawn for the day, owing to the threatening nature of the weatber. The light became very bad, and even as early as 4.30, the question of ceasing play for the day was discussed, but it was decided to go on. Following are the results:— New Zealand—First innings.
