Murray MacDouald sought to reduce the strcnath of the Navy by 8000 men, on the grounds that the two next strongest European powers maintain a force not exceeding 94,000, and the alliance ought to imply a reduction. Mr Balfour, inC vigorous speech, declared that alliance was impossible without maintenance of strength. Mr Mac Donald's amendment was withdrawn, and the Navy Estimates covering the vote for men and money was agreed to.>
