PENNILESS IN SYDNEY. CONSUL REFUSES ASSISTANCE. Received 0, 10.16 p.m. Sydnf,y, March 6 After their release from prison, n few of the Sonoma's crew obtained work, aud the bulk of them were temporarily assisted by the Sailors' Home. They are now wandering the streets penniless.,- The men state they are treated as deserters. Tlieir only clothes were confiscated by the ship, and the American Consul refuses to help them. The Consul, in an interview, stated he would help one or two deserving cases. The others were treated as deserters, and their money aud clothes sent to America. He added, "We have to make an example of these fellows, or the crew of each ship would play up here after hearing what a lime these fello.vs had, and if we assisted them, there would be no end of trouble."
