It'is not often that we liud the five vowels in a word of six letters, but the Maori word Oapuci, the name of a road in the JS'gatiuiuru riding of the Clifton County, contains the whole set. The Ngairc, Norfolk road, and Durham, road school pupils held their annual seaside outing on the New Plymouth beach on Friday altcrnoon, and spent a very enjoyable time. The Clifton County Council just mustered a quorum at its last meeting. There were only four present, which, meant that the Council had to adjourn when one of its members expressed a desire to catch a train a little earlier than the usual closing hour. At the farewell services to be giyen by the Rev. jN«.xon at the Queen street Primitive Methodist Church on Sunday the choir wi'.l render special music. The anthems "Seek ye the Lord" (Dr J. B. Kobe-is) and "What are These" (Dr Sti'iiicr) will be sung.

South Ishuul advices report a sharp rise in the price of sheep, the recent rams being responsible for a rise of fully 2/ to 3/ per head. Buyers from Auckland are operating very freely. even at increased rates, the demand for young sheep in the latter province bc»| mg very keen, and prices are severa: ] shillings per head higher than thosei ruling in Taranaki. Flounders have been very plentiful lat Waitarn lately, ami herrings are present in shoals, more particularly in the part of the river just opposite the freezing works. Line-fishing is altogether too slow for the local fishermen, who have resorted to "jagging." A " jag" is made of three fish-hooks tied back to back, and fastened to a line. The " jaggcr" throws the line well out into the stream, and then sharply jerks the line in again, and any fish lying in the way becomes impaled on one of the hooks. Some of the Maoris arc very expert in the siucncc of" lagging."
About twenty intending members j attended tlie meeting called for Friday L'. evening to discuss the proposal to form t a rowing elub in New Plymouth. The motion was carried, and the sccre- . tary requested to communicate by cir- . cular with the seventy gentlemen who ■ haye signified tlioir intention of becoms ing members, It is hoped that on Friday e next the attendance will be large, for '- the provisional committee cannot re- " commend the formation of a club if S only a lukewarm interost is evinced : " We believe that the young men of the '' town are anxious to have a rowing '' club formed, and that the conditions at „ Uhe harbour are favourable. All that [r j'ls needed now is some practical ln- .„ I terest.
