ANNUAL REPORT.
The chairman's annual report staled that new schools had been opened during the year at Douglas, Mangaroa and Ma'tierc. There were 80 schools open at the end of the year, including the six half-time schools, and the number !»f fleacflierftf |employi}d IwaSj 1143 ,wW were graded as follows:—Sole teachers, 31 female and 10 male; head teachers, 5 female anld 22 male; assistants, 3,"> female and 7 male; pupil teachers, 21 female and 3 male.
The report was received, and will be printed for distribution. MATAU.
Mr Morton reported that the bush had been felled on eight acres of the Matau school site, leaving only a very rough two acres in standing bu&h. He expressed his thanks to Mr S. E. Meredith, the teacher, (for the assistance given in getting the work done. PIHAMA.
The Eiliama techo.ol committee forwarded an application for an addition to the residence, a house of four rooms and a scullery at present doing service for the family o feight.— On the motion of Messrs Tisch and Adlam it was decided to make an application to tho Education Department for a monetary grant. STRATFORD.
Tile Inspector reported on the application for additions to the secondary department of the Stratford school. It was decided to bake application to the Department (for a new room on the ground of the difficulty of organisation and of effectively carrying out the work "Where |tiireo ttaichc\'s arc, taking higher classes in one room, and that a return ot the present roll and attendance be forwarded immediately to the Department. The Mangorei school committee drew attention .to the crowded state of the lower school, there being now 2!) on the roll.—Referred to tile Chief Inspector for his report. OHURA SCHOOLS.
Mi- Chad. J. Bush, Taumarauui, wrote tliat there was no one in the district whom he could recommend ito the position of 'teacher at Tokirima-Tatu, or the Toroto-Mangaroa svhools. Toroto ecttlers had commenced their building. He had found that the reason for liie poor attendance at Manga roa lay in the want of fence around the school grounds, with the result that whilst ttie children were in the schools their horses broke loose, leaving the children out in the nmd at nightfall, Struggling through the mud, towards home. A fence would have saved the situation."
The ilangaroa committee suggested the opening of a half-time school 011 Ithe Turoto j'oadi, wte«e there weW about fourteen children of school age. The committee also asked if it were possible to have the five weeks' holiday in mid-winter instead of summer, as tlio roads there were impassable for children in the winter time. The committee will be informed of Mr Whitcombc's approaching visit. Applications will be invited for the teacher* at ■ TatuTokirima, and Mangapapa schools; and furniture will be supplied.
RESIGNATIONS.
The Hoard accepted the resignations of Mr Ballantyne, assistant inspector: Mr Buniside, head-teacher at Inglewood j Miss Iladdrell, assistant at Omata; Mrs Birkctt, mistress at l'ukearuhc.
NEW PLYMOUTH TECHNICAL SCHOOL. •

GENERAL. Several pupils now attending the New Plymouth High School, wrote that they had been unable to obtain their certificates of proficiency from the Central school.—Mr Dempsey will be asked to explain, and if the certificates cannot be found fresh certificates will be issued.
The Chief Inspector was granted permission to order technical apparatus to the value of £IOO from the Education Supply Association.
