The, secretary :of I the Bom-atio." oports Ground Committee -wrote aski"f V't' "" ter 1> i,L ' a rulm 'ng from Diaidet-street to the middle 0 f ti lL spoils ground, and removed somu tini""go, should be replaced. The ground was now being prepared for grassin". and it would be convenient to'do tin' work now. lie understood the Jure Jir.gade was anxious that the pine. Mould be r^placwl.—Referred to the Works Coinmifctec,
THE LOANS. Letters from the solicitors of I h A.M.l\ Society in reference to the racing of the loan were dealt with in «oni uiittee, and referred to the /.'inane. CoimniLtee, with power to act.
OC'i'AVl l\S I'LACE. Cr. Monteath objected to the AVorks f'onimittee's recommendation concernmg the Oclaviu.s PJacc drainage. II - Considered the residents there were entitled to ordinary conveniences with out furnishing the means, and moved that a proper footpath and side channel be made.
Ihe Mayor said (hat there was already a drain connecting two houses ) tl J c J ''l |( «-street. tlraiii, and doubtess Colonel Messenger's propertv could lie connected with that. After an irregular dieiission, tiie matter was reared back to the Works Committee 1,0 prepare estimates and icport at next mooting.
yiVIAN-tSTKKiIT DKAINAGE.
Mr J. J). Hoy ~-rote with reference to the drainage of Vivian-street, and uiged Ihe necessity for carrying the sewer a ong the street right through 110 m Alt. Ugecuml,.-.street to Dawsons.ieet. file expenditure would be fully warranted by the benefits to be „b----.allied.
lir lloy waited i, n t|, ( , <_'uiiut-;i, and -a.d lie w ,n very anxious, to t|„. ds of lie' u-.'igiiliourhood, that the "ti-fct should be properly drained. The street was dilliciilt to drain, and some of the sewage came through his proper ty. ""'king a very objectionable smell. Hie house drainage final some proper! ies draining into the street had caused .1 bad .smell during the past summer, and made the piace a.most a /ever-bed.
Discussion was taken when the Drainage Conimtlees' report, which recommended only chains of drain-
ing, came up. Cr. iieilringer said there were uiaiiv more important ■teets which had hail nothing done iu the way of sanitation, lie instanced l'owderham and C'ourtenay streets. The drainage stall' had been almost continuously engaged recently in the West Ward, and it was now the east end turn, for he supposed he must not insinuate that the west end was more insanitary than the east. If was all a question of finance, and lie agreed that 110 big drainage works should be undertaken till the commit tee had brought down a comprehensive scheme. Cr. \\ ebster moved an amendment that the sewer be laid along Vivianstreet from Daw.soii-strcet to Mt. Edge-cuinbe-street. He instanced the revenue derivable, and said the Engineer iiad reported that this was one of tile worst streets in Ihe town.
Cr. Wilson: He said that about half :i dozen streets.
Cr. \\ ebster: Order, please, 'lhe Mayor favoured the adoption oi the report, in order to conserve the fund* for tin' urgent to In; presented soon by Molesworth-street. Cr. Monteith <!iiiphusised tlie fact that dia.nage was not laid down entirely for revenue purposes, and lie was going to object to any further drainage extens ; ons until h e eonkUee Avhere the money was coming from to do tne works already authorised. The amendment was negatived, only ('r,s. Parker. Browne, and Webster supporting it. Cr. Webster gave notice to move at next meeting tlnit the drainage be carried as fur as Mr Roy's icsidcneo.
VAHVAh LABOURERS' PAY. Cr. I'ellringer moved 'that casual labourers' pay at the rate of a shilling itn hour should lake effect its |rom I March Ist instead of March 31st as re ! cjiumejided. Cr. "Webster sdconidecl. The Mayor said the Council seemed poftsesMjd of the idea that it could make money ad. lib. lie wa.s advers? to recommending any expense unprovided for iu tlie estimates. Although only £lll had been provided in the K>timatcs for incidentals, over £SOO had been spent, avd ii was well that economies had b: • •. t j M some other directions.- was carried. The Inglewood s-chool committee wrote thanking the Council for the free u-e of the municipal baths to the school children 'on the date of their recent picnic at New Plymouth.
