Shvrtly after midnight one of the most violent thunderstorms which has | visited the city {or years was experienced. The peals of thunder were exceptionally loud, and the lightning very vivid, while the rain came down 111 torrents. The rainfall to U o'clock this morning was 1.17 inches.
At 1.40 a,ui. there was a vicious flash of lightning, a fact which was yividly impressed on the operators m the Electrical Syndicate's engine house. Tlio shock pulled the plant like a bin sliort circuit, and passed oil". The immediate result was the extinction of all the electric lights in the city, but the illumination revived itself autoiuiilica!-
At South Karori, however, the effect was more marked. There, says Mr Mabin, manager for the company, a bare mam runs through the district, and it seems that the lightning played on til that main. The public lights were put out, and private lamps were also given over to darkness. About 4 o'clock this afternoon thero was another thunderstorm, but much milder. After an exceptionally close nnd muggy Saturday, with spasmodic showers, a storm broke over New Plymouth on Saturday night, with a brilliant electrical display, On Sunday there was very lieayy rain, with distant thunder peals, and at night the sky was (frequently ablaze with lightning.
