NEW PLYMOUTH CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

Ike meeting called for Friday night with tlio object of forming ian 'athletic and Caledonian society in Nesv Ply. mouth was fairly well attended. Mr Jas. Clarke, one of tlio vice-presidents of the New Zealand Athletic Union, presided. He explained that it had bcon left to the Star Club to provide athletics here, and it was thought that belter support would be given to an affiliated society. t Mr J. .Eliot proposed, and Mr J Stagpoole seconded, that a Caledonian society be formed here, the latter genUcnian speaking of tho great popularity of those societies 'and the cordiality and the success of the gatherings. Mr J. A. Smyth, one of the founders of the North Tpranuki Calcdoni-ui ciety at Waitara, detailed the steps taken in the launching of that success, till institution. lie suggested a canvass of the town for members before the society was actually formed, i'lus the speaker put in the form of an amendment, seconded by Mr ,T. Bennett. After discussion, in which it was pointed out that postponed meetings yave the impression of "cold water" on the proposal, the motion was put and carried. Mr Clarke was appointed interim secretary until the next meeting. Mr binyth s motion to canvass tho town for members was then put and carried, the subscription being ll\-ed at five shillings, the ticket to admit member and lady to the sports gathering. Mr K. AVebstcr said there could be no doubt of the success of the society, which was much needed. In answer to Mr Smyth, tho Chairman stated the Star Football Club would not hold sports now that this society was formed. A programme committee, comprising Messrs J. Bennett, J. Eliot, K. Webstcr, A. George, and J. A. Smyth was appointed to draw up a programme for the first gathering, to be held on Easter Monday. Ihe committee was authorised to Visit "Western Park and approach the authorities with a view to engaging it. Ihe meeting then adjourned until Friday rifght next, ' :> At a subsequent meeting of the committee, arrangements were made for inspecting the Western Park.
