SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Tiie night carnival under electric light on Thursday at the New* Plymouth saltwater baths was largely attended, fully four hundred watching the programme of swimming and diving events, amongst which were severa/ novelty Loins. About ,U2 was paid for admission. Except for a little de lav at the start, the events were got oil fairly smartly, and finished :if few minute's before time. - lu all events the finishes were close, mid the scratch men had invariably to be- icckouc-d wilh. a fitting trilmie to Mr Lints' handicapping. Anj (iwkwiO'd ]omission was the failure to appoint lap stewards in the ■>■>{) yards handicap, the competitors receiving no intimation that the distance had been covered. Grant and Hunter were u> have attempted to lower the colony's record in this event, but_ Hunter oniy completed a couple of laps, and tae task was ,oo much for Grant swimming alone on the scratch mark'. The officials all strove hard, and kept things moving even belter than might be ex peeled where there was so little room available for their working. Special mention may here be made of the excellent display of diving, more particularly in the 'juvenile class. Final:, Storey 1 I'fankucli 2, Kelly 3. Time,' ■ioscc. A great race, well contested. Springboard Dive (Might, entry and recovery).—Null, 24 points, 1: J. Am bury, 20 points, 2. In this event the diving was splendid, more particularly in the second and third rounds. Null made his points in three very neat headers. lOOvds Handicap. First heat: lirowii, Usee. .1; C. S. Kelly, 17sec, 2. Time, liu 2-is. Second heal: l'tankucii, Msec, 1; Gibbons Usee, 2. Time, tin 17s. Final: Gibbons 1, Brown and I'fankucli, dead heat, 2.
