When first produced in Australia, at Her Majesty's Theatre, Sy-1-n-V. on ,\hiv lilli. nf last year, il is to have evoked a demonstration that lias rarely been equalled in the annals of the 'Australian Thespian world. It is said to surpass all pre vious operas in the magnificence of il < spectacular 'scenes and the luKtiriousness of its Oriental dressing. The songs which are thickly scattered through the piece are haunlingly sweet. Amongst the most popular musical numbers are, "My Cinnamon Tree,' "Pearl of Sweet C'.vlon." "The Goll.vwogs." "I.litt'e Sloe Eyes," "With a 800 and a Ram," "Tea in the Morn ing." '•London Conversations/' "I'retiv Poll," cic. The story is a charming one, and retains its interest throughout the two acts. 11 is, in short, the adventure in Ceylon of one Harry Vereker, who has purchased a ten plantation, and, fap'lcn (n Hive! with Naunya. a Cingalese tea girl. The news of his intended marriage travels io England and brings his sister, Lady Patricia Verne, out to the scene! of
action. Lady Patricia is also out for the purpose to marry Rob Warren. Then we have Chambuddy Ram, a llaboo lawyer, who has studied law in England, and represents himself as a native prince. This rascally lawyfer has, however, stolen a priceless black pearl, the property of a noble of Candy, Boobhamba, and on Chambuddy's return to Ceylon ho is accused of the theft before Sir Peter Loftns, the high commissioner, and incidentally also with hiding Boobhama's wife, to whom the. latter was married by proxy some years before. "Cham" is given one hour to produce the lady and pearl, and it is on this order that the whole
