The ranks in camp on Tuesday were somewhat attenuated by the luseuee of a large party of: the Guards, but useful work was accomplished. Company drill was gone through in the morning, and.ni the evening the troops presented a spic and span appearance when D.A. Adjutant Genera! Bauchope made an inspection. Tho newly-appointed ollicer is a gentleman of genial personality, likely, we should say, to become very popular with all branches ot the New Zealand forces. He i|iiestioued oilieers and men alike as to their length of service, etc., andjUy his observations on military topics generally indicated that he is or the go-ahead type calculate 1 to put the forces on a better footing than at present exists. After parade the troops were given work under active service conditions, the special idea being to intercept an attacking party marchmg on New Plymouth. The enemy having a gun renderod road inarching perilous, and rough cross-country work —a good portion of the advance being at Ihe double—was necessitated. Men and oilieers ctu'vied out the fatiguing duties very well, honours being about even with the attacking and defending torees. The G arrisou Baud, which was also inspected the same evening, led the way home from the rendezvous, the Hcutii Bridge, with martial music.
