Three horses are reported to have been killed. Townspeople state that there was a panic. Luckily, there was a small audience present and the crowd immediately (led, some refuging in trees, j others on roofs. The. latest report states that frequent shots have been beard in the direction ot the hunt. AN EXCITING CHASE. ESCAPEE SHOT DEAD. AFTEII MAULING A PURSUER. Eeeeived 20, 5.5 p.m Sydney, January 20. [ Only one lioness gained its freedom. A party hunted her hll night, without success, bnt the trail was picked up yesterday, and traced to a farm, where the lioness was found attacking a cow.
Shots were ilred at her, and she Icfl her prey. Two men named Veiteh and Alaloney pursued her and fired. The lioness turned and charged like a thunderbolt. Both men dodged round a tree, dropping their guns. The lioness caught Yeitch by the arm, but let go, after inflicting slight injuries. Maloney immediately picked up his gun and fired, killing the animal in- j stantly.
