The Primitive Methodist Conference opened in New Plymouth on Wednesday afternoon with a meeting of the Preachers' Friendly Society, the procoedings being of a private nature. At night thero was a moderate congregation at the Queen street Church, Rev. T. H. Lyon, G.C.D., preaching the conference sermon, taking as his text Isaiah, ch. 52, v. 1:{ : " Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, lie' shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high." The preacher said that the prophet was preparing (ho Jews for the. coming of the Messiah, whom they would hesitate to accept when they saw him as a babe at Bethlehem, at a carpenter's bench, mocked and spat upon in the Judgment Hall, and crucified between the two thieves, but there was something in our nature that responded to lore and aacrilio on our behalf, and people loved Christ because He first loved and gave Himself for us, They had the Divine assurance that Christ would be exalted, and there wore not wanting signs' that tho prophecy was being amply fulfilled. Jesus Christ, by his purity, had shown his. worthiness to he exalted, and His purity warranted His people in hoping that the Kingdom would be an inctoasing one. Ohnst wquld be exalted, because mankind could not do without Him as a saviour and a helper. Put Christ on oue side, and man rushed to sacrifice. Deyotiou to and the love of God would 'mean that right, and temperance, and joy and peace would be exalted also, ami war, injustice, and oppression would pass away. Their purpose must be God's purpose, and they could not fail to exalt and extol Jesus Christ, and to mako him very high. J
