Tlic show of carnations and sweet peas ojn-jK'd in tin l uiiiin avenue of tlic Exhibition today, is one of Uio best ever seen ill the colony, tile entrii'ii f.ir exceeding the previous record of the United Horticultural Society, which is organising the display. The exhibits cover !)00- feet of tabling', while a considerable iloor space has been taken up liy pot plants. In addition to a beautiful display of sweet peas and carn-ilions, the exhibits incluil.l line samples of pelargoniums, gladioli, und other llowcrs, ferns and • fruits. A Sydney visitor expresses the opinion that the display of sweet peas is the finest yet seen in Australasia. The show was well attended, and will be open again tomorrow. Deputy-Mayor l'ayling will give an address of welcome to the Besses o' the liarn Band in the Exhibition concert hall to-morrow afternoon at tared o'clock. Special suitable items will be rendered by the Exhibition orcb.es.' tra during the afternoon and arrangements are complete for the evening reception by the local bandsmen, and for the first performance by the band, which takes place on the sports ground.
Mr Collins, of the Labour Depart rnent, Wellington, has arrived to classify and display to the best advantage the exhibits of "sweated"' industries, procured and forwarded to the Exhibition by the High Commissioner. Th« collection comprises clothing of all descriptions, chains, nails, children's toy* and a great variety of articles. Tllß exhibit will be of undoubted interest and value to manufacturers and work' era generally. The Hon, Mr Hall Jones, Minister for Railways, advises the general manager that he has completed arrangements for cheap railway fares for ape- t cial town trips from all centres Witt*' which Chvistcliureh is connected by rail. The fares will bo on the very lowest scale possible, the intention being to use the railway system ooncejitrating in Christchurcli as a feeder. to the Exhibition.
Tliu Fijians, whose novel dances have been a great attraction of the Exhibition, ami who have made them selves great friends with many of tha townspeople,, leave on Friday on a short trip to Dunedin and the Southern lands. They will resume performances at the Exhibition ou thoir-ta-turn.
A fat lamb show was one of the, features of the Exhibition to day. Sim iltiv shows are given monthly by the local frozen meat company under tha auspices of Die Canterbury A. and P. Association, and attract much interest.
"Wonderland's" floral fete, Bxed lot, January 17th, has caused quite a stir among local llorists and gardeners. Orders for blooms have been placed with different nurserymen" us far South as Timaru, and one local firm lias received a preliminary order for ten thousand sprays. Preparations are being made for the sensational lire remit act, and numerous other highly orig. ' inal and diverting attractions are pro. mised. ;
The completion by the Agricultural Department of the arrangement and classification of its numerous' and extensive wool exhibits, obtained from all parts of the colony, completes a very thorough representation of wool at the Exhibition. No product of the colony is represented more fully or to better advantage than wool, and the excellent samples shown, both in the Agr.cultural Court and in the provi£ •*ial bays, must prove .of-the ww greatest interest and value to ferii ers.
