Mr T. H. Gill, ot the Newtown District High School, has been appointed an Inspector of Secondary Schools. Mr W. Il\ Spencer, of New Plymouth, at present Chief Inspector of Schools in Taranaki, and lately appointed Assistant-Inspector at Hawke's Bay, has been appointed editor of the " School Journal." Dr. Hay, assistant Inspector-General of Hospitals and Charitable Aid, has been appointed Inspector-General of Mental Hospitals, and Dr. Valintine, Assistant Chief Health Ollieer, has been appointed inspector-Gcuoral of Hospitals. The two institutions will iu future be under scuarate heads. Mr Joseph Devlin, M.P., and delegate from the Irish Nationalist Party, arrived 111 New Plymouth by the afternoon train on Tuesday, and was welcomed at the railway station by the reception committee, comprising the Mayor and several of the leading citizens.

Henry Howarth, examiner of titles in the Land Transfer and Deeds OlUee, Wellington, died at Wellington yesterday after a short illness ; aged 72 years Deceased was a sou of James Howarth.. ivko many years ago was Provincial ■Solicitor and Crown Prosecutor at Uunedin. The late Mr Howarth was elected to the House of Representatives in 1869 as member for Taieri.
