Although the ollieials worked hard and conscientiously to ensure the Kuecess of the meeting, 1 am fully convinced of tile necessity of appointing a stipendiary steward at every race meeting. In a huge Held it is a'difficult matter to follow each ruunvr, and it requires an experienced mail to detect any inconsistency in the different contestants. There have lieeti many instance:, of inconsistent running during the present season, that, wiiu the proposed legislation, it is imperative on tlie part of racing clubs to use every means in their power to detect and punish any offender.
The Auckland Racing Club were favoured with a record attendance on the opening day of tiie Summer Meeting. The totulisator turnover also proved to be a record. Xlio sum of jt2G,221 was put through. This represents an increase of .£077% on last year's.
The time registered by Master Delavel in tile Auckland Cup was 3 min 28 two fifth sec, which is a record for that event.
i'aritutu, who hau the services, oi Jones, was made a staunch favourite but evidently could not foot it with the winner. Another local candidate in Husticjae was the last to pass the post.
The Committee of the Taranaki Jockey Club met last night for further consideration of the enquiry into tlie alleged ringing on of a ticket after .tile " iirst leg" ot the double liad been decided on Thursday, and the following resolution was passed :—" In consequence ol a rumour to the effect that one of the tickets on the winning double at the Christmas Meeting. on Thursday was rung on after the iirst race was run, the Stewards having taken further evidence are perfectly satisfied that tke two tickets were taken out at least live minutes before the start for the iNew Piymouthl Handicap," C
