ELTHAM AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL
Perfect weather prevailed for the second day of tin; above. The heat, however, for two or three hours was so oppressive as to completely prostrate some of the competitors in several of the events.' 'i'he. attendance was huge, constituting a record for a second day of the Carnival. The. appointments were excellent, so. much so that the lengthy programme was finished at the catalogued time. Tlie competitions were most interesting, the times throughout being considered distinctly good. Excitement ran high when tlie final for the big event, the Axemen's Cup, was chopped. It was expected that Dave Pretty, on his performance in his heat, would run very close to first. The struggle was a grim one, and tlie big crowd watched the contest \viH( bated yjmtjth. The winner turned up in ,1. Neustroski, of Midhirst, who takes .£IOO. lie chopped very clean, and with perfect judgment. The Australian representatives, as anticipated, showed much better form than on the preceding day. The sawing events mid under-hand chop were also line events, and the winners were in each case treated to loud applause. The cycling and running contests provided a pleasant diversion at intervals. Xcustros-1 ki set a .strong pace, mid kept it up> to the end, winning with a little to spare from llarlncll. Weston wtio close up third. Pretty's performance was most praiseworthy. The winner and also the second man had previously done nothing tl' note in the chopping arena, but had evident]}' been splendidly trained. Yolzke (Midhirsi) 4 This contest caused great excitement, and was a muScie-rackiiig go. Casey made a great effort to hold tlic championship won by him last year, but was just beaten by Phillips, last year's runner-up, who fell completely exhausted on severing his log, remaining in a fainting condition for some time.
