Received 10th, 9.50 p.m. ; Washington, December 19. ' Mr Metcalfe, Minister for Commerce,, in the course of reports sub-' nutted to -Congress, shows that there were only 93 Japanese children attending the schools in San Francisco. They are clean, bright, and well-be-haved, and, since they are scattered over the city, it is impossible for them to attend single schools. Mr Met* calfe claims that the Japanese are entitled to the fullest protection and. the highest consideration.

M. Aoki, the Japanese Ambassador, at a banquet at Washington, referred to the living monument of cordial friendship which cements tho United States and Japan, and ridiculed the, idea of a struggle between the two nations for the control of the Pacific.
