CALLIOPE DOCK DISASTER
INQUEST HESUMISD. Per Press Association. Auckland, December IT. The Dock inquest has resumed. Mr Hanier, engineer to the Harbour, Board, expressed the opinion that the. dock blocks were absolutely correct in design, and were not responsible! - ' for the accident to the Mamari,'whiek lie attributed to improper roping and, gradual tension on the rope at the; steamer's head, as the water was pumped out, until the blocks werey drawn into a position of instability, and collapsed.
Later. At the inquiry into the Calliope/ Dock accident, the engineer to tn.ev Harbour Board put forward the the-, ory that the accident was due to the: vessel being dragged forward by, voertaut ropes, Uius shifting the)' blocks and causing them to collapse* with the full weigut of the boat bear, ing on them. Two other engineers,, wno have had experience of docks in various pans of uie world, supportedtnis explanation of the accident, ern-r phaticauy declaring that" no other-' view was possible. Another witness,gave evidence, to seeing the boatropes so taut that there was no vibra--lion iu them, and as a consequence hep cautioned four or live men working, under him to keep clear of the ropes.for fear tlicy would carry away, 'iuiai oeing a new pnase in the evidence, and 111 oruer to give all parties an of portumty of reiuuug tue theory, Uu>. inquiry was turtuer adjourned fM January 7th.
