The Treasury notified provisional acceptance of the Board's proposals to raise £11(10 for the construction of John's road, from the Mountain road upwards. Mr Joseph Pennington wrote that he had-fixed the value of the portion of the Sull'olk road, GO chains, dividing farms of Messrs A. E. Jsuvwc.ll and Fred. Braecgiidls, thirty chains from the Maiiganui llivcr at .til per acre and :i(J chains at CO per acre. The lands will be offered to the adjoining owners at the valuations.
The District J toad Engineer wrote that £.30 was now available for metalling the Surrey road from section 112 upwards. The Treasury requested the Board to pay into the Bank of New Zealand the sum of £1122 Bs, being interest for the half-year on loans amounting to £27,5011 ss, inscribed up to Eebrtiary Ist, IUUIi. The Secretary to the Treasury, in connection with the Board's application for a loan of £SO to deviate, form, and metal the Toe Toe road from Junction road upwards, asked if the road had ever been previously metalled.
The Waitara West lload Board wrote that the Board would pay to this Board half the net proceeds of the Wortley road toll-gate provided such proceeds are expended on the Davis road, and«that the Moa Board will contribute the sum of £f towards the cost of establishing the said gate.
Mr Chaniney said he would not agree to the collection of any toll from sheep. He had understood from Mr ilcuwuod that sheep would be excluded.
Mr Laurence said the Board had nothing to do with the gate, ft was in the adjoining road uistrict.
The Board thou proceeded to deal with a motion by Air Chaniney that the September resolution concerning the gate be rescinded. Mr tioby seconded, and the motion was lost. Mr Hcmvood moved that the Waitara Board be written to, asking that sheep be not charged at the gate Carried.
Motukawa road settlers petitioned the Board to vary the terms of its decision to call tenders for nine chains of metalling in one piece, and asked that three chains of the road below Virgin's house and live chains on the hill on the Tarata aide of the bridge be metalled instead.
The chairman, who had visited the road with Air Chamney, reported unfavourably, as he considered carting metal for three miles along the wcil° formed uumetalled road would ruin the formation. Although notilied, Ihe settlers had not met him. He had seen three of them. One was evidently wholly interested in keeping the road out of debt, the second occupied himself with personal abuse of iUr Chamney, and tbe third coincided with the cUairmau's views. Mr Chainuey opposed the motion. Mr Henwood said the Hoard was getting childish, passing resolutions u t one meeting and talking about rescinding at the next. The Hoard adhered to its previous decision. It was decided to approach Mr Buckthought with a view to arranging for the lencing of the gravel pit on his property on this road. C. X. \'\ ard, foreman, reported that the Mana road bridge decking had been damaged by a drove of bullocks. A. Hoskui, foreman, reported Mr J. Nielsou was carting logs on the Kverett road and his bullock teams had damaged the bridge and brid'-e approaches. The bridge would stand very little more of such traffic. Lincoln road needed three new culverts, iiiclnnond and Dudley road W"st needed attention. Waler-tabUii" was needed on various roads-.- * Mr Baigent iplklie informed that the Lojtrd holds him responsible for damage done, and his attention will be drawn to complaints of sled"iii" on the road. ° "
It was decided to pay the foremen full-pajs-fcx. Christmas Day, Itoxin" Day, and .V,.,, Vcai's Day. ' 'The chairman's action in allottin"' another .eld for work on the Hursthouse road was approved. The chairman reported that MiMarsh had decided it was as well to | allow the foreman to do the draining I required on the Egniont road instead of calling tenders for the work Messrs Orbell and Mackav, the Board's engineers, reported tile contractors for metalling Lepper and llursthouse roads were making good progress. Stone from the river was being obtained for the Mangaone road and the contractors wore iiniin"in<r for a crusher. .Metalling on the Bed° ford road was proceeding. Tliev found that by making a small deviations a grade of 1 in J;j could be ob-, tamed for about 10 chains and 1 in 1; for about 12 chains. This would give a good road from the Mountain road to the first saddle, about half the road, for considerably less than the Government grant of "£IOO. About half an acre of land would be required for the deviation.
It was stated the settler would sell the necessary land for deviation for .CO'.
It satisfactory arrangements can be made, the deviation will be proceeded with at once. Messrs llildred and Coutts tender for the lower contract, metalling 35 chains on the Surrey road, was accepted. Accounts amounting to £l7O 10s 4d were passed for payment. A special meeting of the Board in connection with special rutin" orders will be held on the sth prox.
