BAY OF ISLANDS TRAGEDY
A MAORI WOMAN SHOT DEAD. HER SON SERIOUSLY WOUNDED. Per Press Association, Auckland, December 15. A murder was committed bv a Maori named Hirini Taui, aged 3(i, at a settlement near Kaikohe, Bay of Islands, last niglit, the victim being a Jlaori woman, Nari IVnclia. She was shot dead by Tani, who also shot at her son, seriously wounding him, The murderer subsequently escaped, and is still at large.
VICTIM OF JEALOUSY. MURDERER STILL AT LARGE. EVIDENTLY INTENDS SUICIDE. Later. The Knikohe correspondent of the Star telegraphs as follows in regard to the shooting case;—Hirini Haihai Taui, of Tautoro, last night shot Mrs Perieha Kingi, wife of the native constable at Kaikohe, also her son, fourteen years old. The woman died shortly afterwards, and her Bon is in a critical condition. The cause of the crime was jealousy. Taui, it is said, intended shooting his own wife, who was in the house with Mrs Kingi. her son. Other shots were fired, but woundng the woman and the second her son. Other shots were red, but had no effect. Constables Cahill and King are in pursuit of Taui. He was lust seen uy a native named Waa on the road to Kaikohe, with a gun slung across his shoulders. He informed Waa that ho intended finishing his mission. He said Waa would find papers and a will in a certain place, and asked him to carry out the instructions contained therein.
