THE FEDERAL ELECTIONS

PARTY LEADERS RETURNED. HEAVY POLLING THROUGHOUT. PARTICULARS NOT AVAILABLE. Received 13th, 1.28 a.m. Sydney, December 12. Polling proceeded very quickly in the several States, but the returns tonight arc so incomplete as to afford no possibility of defining the strength of parties. in New South Wales, the return of Sir W. Lyue, Messrs lieid, Hughes and Watson is beyond doubt. There is heavy voting in the majority of the divisions for the Senate. Three of the retiring Senators, Messrs Gould, Walker, and Malken, have a substantial lead over the Labour and Socialist bunches. Mr Chapman, Po»t-master-General, has a good lead over his opponent, and is almost certain to be returned. In Victoria, the excitement at Ballarat was unprecedented, but Mr Deakiu has a solid lead over Scullin. The Senate vote in South Australia plates the Socialist bunch ahead. Playford is about 5000 behind.

As the returns, however, are comparatively few, the position is subject o considerable cliange.
