CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Clifton Comity Council liold its ordinary meeting on Friday at Wailurn. Mr W. Foreman presided, and the other councillors present were " Messrs T. Melvenzie, \V. A. Wright, C. O'Sullivan, 11. T. Joll, G. G. Bishell and (J. Gaustad. TIKORANGI. Jlessrs I!. F. Jury and J. T. Smart, of Tikorangi, wrote asking for some work to be done 011 the Stockman-road leading to their properties. The road was in a very bad state.—Left in the hands of the engineer. WAGES. Jlr Langinan, road surfaceman, asked for an increased wage of 8s per day. The applicant would be informed that he will get 8s a day when entitled to it under the conditions laid I down by the Council. The engineer remarked that Langnian would scarcely be satisfied with that, for 8s and 'Js a day was offering elsewhere for good men. THE GRADER. Or. Joll, on behalf of the sub-com-mittee, reported that the Borough Council had secured the grader bj tender. It transpired iu the discussion thai the borough tender of £3!) 10s was for the grader and all accessories, bul ' this Council's tender was exclusive 0! the shed. In that case, it was argued the grader belonged to the Council as its tender was thus equal to JJ4-. Cr. O'Sullivun suggested that if tin Siorough Council was dissatisfied they could return the grader. The chairman said that was not required, for the Council had auothei grader coining. Left iu the hauds of the chairman. TOLL-GATE. Oil the motion of (Jr. O'Sullivan, the Council accepted Mr W, Cole's oiler oi £1 per annum for the right to pass through the toll-gate with his luilkeart, IiIiENUI. A petition from a number of settlers ol Urenui asking that the Council employ the grader 011 the Kakapo-road 1 from lirenui to Waitara, was referred to the engineer. OTAKAOA-KOAD, Mr 11. liaxter forwarded the resolution of a meeting of Tarata ratepayers asking the Council to give a helping hand in the representations being made to the Government asking ihem to reconsider not to subsidise the XUOU loan for the metalling of portion of the Otaraoa-road, the .main road to the port of Waitara, from as far back as Whangaiuoinoua. The letter stated that it was impossible to do the work without subsidy. The road carried a great deal of outside traffic. The Council will use its beat endeavours with the Minister for Public Works. PUKEARUHE. Settlers on the Pukearuhe-road asked for metalling. The Council decided that the work be put iu hand early next year if finances would permit. XOXiOI'S WEEDS. The Inspector of Noxious Weeds warned the Council to clear noxious weeds over a piece of the deviated Yicery-road. The chairman considered the Council was not liable, as this piece of road was purchased some years ago by the l'ubliu Trustee. Cr. O'Sullivan said that the adjoin- j ing tenant would keep the land clear j if allowed to use it. The chairman said the Council might need to make the load ere long in order to gain access to the gravel which was close at hand. Left in the chairman's hands. Cr. O'Sullivan asked the Council to have blackberry cut 011 the side of the Miiui-Mokau road fronting native lands. OKOKE-ROAD. Mr G, T. Murray, Dislrict Roads Engineer, wrote in reference to tin state of the Okokc-road when gazetted as a county road. There was „Cl 3 still in hand, and he recommended tin Council to apply for this to be spent in improving the road. Slips would cost .CIO to remove. Cr. Wright said that would not help the road very much. It was 100 narrow. Instead of culverts open channels wen; cut across the road. MIMI-MOKAL' ROAD. The District Koad Engineer wrote that the psescnt amount payable to the Council on the Mimi-Mokau road account was .tsjy 7s. Of this was u direct grant, and the remainder was a £ for .C subsidy 011 the Council's expenditure, lie urged the Council to adopt vigorous measures in expending this money in the present favourable weather, so that the whole of the money would be advantageous!v spent, The chairman said that tin: majority ol the money had been allocated, JC2-30 of it t« be spent in metalling towards Mr Joil's.

On the application of .Mr Kelsey, the clerk was instructed to apply to the Treasury for an additional loan of CSO, being ten per cent on the Ma-iiganiLihoi'-road loan of £SUO, TOLLS. The Council discussed the point as to whether the toll charges could be levied 011 cattle being driven to the pound— .Xo action takeu. TllvOliAXeU. Mr 11. Ji. Jury oilered to put metal on one chain of a bad cutting on the Tikorangi-road if the Council would lay two chains, the estj.mated cost being per chain. The engineer recommended accepting the oiler, and this was adopted. Kxtaxmrs KEPOM. The engineer., Mr C. 1". JJowsett. reported that contracts Mere progressing satisfactorily. A wing pile and sheet would have to be put on the west side of the Unaero bridge, lie proposed to repair a bridge on the seaward end of the Xjkorima road, for the purpose of obtaining >toji<- at the Waitara end of tin- main road. A LOAN. Mr Ehvin waited 011 the Board with reference to tlie proposal to raise a loan of £2iio for forming and metalling the Clifton-road, through the police reserve at Pukearuhe. The settlers interested would allocate their thirds for the payment of interest. The Council decided to take the steps to raise the loan, provided the authorities would give their consent to the proposed plans. TEM DISKS. Tenders were received as follows: Formation, Mangapai-road: .J. Mathicson, ;C.i4. ilctulling Junction-road: R. and \Y. Drake, si9s 10s 8d; J. R. Xeilsen, £175. Metalling Main North road, Lrenui: Piripo Teaho, £175; 0. Kiiuckey, £ 136 13s 4d. The lowest in each instance was accepted. Passing of accounts concluded the business.
