RECREATION SPORTS GROUND.
ANNUAL MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE.
The annual meeting of the Recreation Sports Ground Committee was ho:d last night. There were present: Messrs A. 'Humphries (chairman), 11. Stockciv R. .H. Geuvge, Gen. Grifriihs, 11. Ford, H. M. Sondtam, J. 11. Hobbs, A. Perilling and J. Clarke (secretary). Mr F. C. Tribe, the only absentee, sent I an apology, he being out of the district.
The annual report and balancesheet, as published, were adopted on the motion of the chairman and Mr Ford. In his remarks, Mr Humphries acknowledged the ready as ance given by the Recreation Ground Board, and hoped to be able to fully repay them for any loss or inconvenience occasioned bv the alteration; to the grounds. 'To the Rugby Union, a'so to the bands, to the public, to the guarantors, and the Press, the thanks of the committee were due for their willingness to assist and for the confidence reposed in the committee collectively and individual ,'y. Ho mentioned that the bazaar and art union promised to be a big success, and he urged each member of the committee to put forth lils best efforts. He considered that the guarantors should have a representative on the management. Speaking of the grounds, the chairman said the committee had done wisely in employing Mr Cole as foreman. He had a fine gang of men, and, according to the engineer, about half the earth had been removed at a cost of under £2OO. Speaking of honorary members, Mr Humphries, thought that the number would largely increase when the privileges attaching to honorary membership were known. Among other things, it was sugested that honorary members shou.d have a special stand in ho best position, covered if possible. Mr Humphries congratulated the committee oh tho sustained interest, and said that with this fueling paramount the ground should be clear of debt iu a very eliort time. They could not gauge the importance of the work they were doing. The provision of a good ground would mean that al the big football and other matches would be played here, and the ground should earn from /J4OO to ,£SOO a year. Whist congratulating' the members ou their enthusiastic, hard work, Mr Humphries said that without the aid of the ladies and the Pi-cm on every occasion the present saiifaclory position would have been impossible. The officers were all re-elected as fo.lows:—Chairman, Mr Humphries; secretary, Mr J. Clarke; trea-
surer, Mr G. Griffiths; auditor, Mr E. P. Webster.
Highly complimentary remarks were made concerning the amount of time devoted and the energy 'displayed by the holders of office. ' An honorarium of 12 guineas was voted to the secretary, but he declined to accept it "unless the improvements were carried out at considerably under the estimate. He said he had taken the secretaryship as an honorary position, and he intended to hold it as such. Tlio chairman and treasurer also oarrie in for very high encomiums, and suitably replied. Votes of thanks to the retiring officers, the ladies, the New Plymouth bands, and the Press closed the proceedings.
