A London e-.b'.e announces tho death of Sir Edward Jas. lieed, K.C.8., formerly Chief Constructor of the Jiavy. Mr It. Carpenter, formerly of the " Taranaki Herald" staff, left for Aneklaud on Saturday night to take up reporting on the ''HewZealand Herald." Mr James Hirst, M.l.Meeh.E., AI.E.E., of .Newcastle, JN.SW,, who has been on a short Tisit to New Plymouth, was a passenger to Auckland on Saturday night. Mr Frank Aroa, of the Urtili store, was brought into the hospital late on Saturday night sulfering from appendicitis, necess tating an operation, which is to be performed within a day or two.
Friends throughout the colony will regret to hear of the death, which occurred on Saturday, of M.rs W. A. Parkinson, wife of the proprietor of the ilawera " Star." The deceased lady, who was 51 years of age, had been ailing for some little time, and underwent a serious operation about three weeks ago, but only temporary relief was receiyed.
A Press Association wire from Kotol'ua states that Mr J. W. May, draper, died ou Saturday night after a week's illness. Death was due to pneumonia. A week ago he was brought in from the country where ho was out doing business, being then in a critical state of health. Mr May was greatly respected, and was a good townsman. He leaves a wife and four children.
