ST, MARY'S ANNIVERSARY.

Special service.-} were held at- St. Mary's Church, yesterday, to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the appointment of the first clergyman i:i eharge of the parish. The preacher for th e clay was the Rev. H. A. Faveli. The services were fully choral. The To Deum was sung to Dykes' setting, and the anthem was "Ye that Stand in the House of the Lord" (Spinney). Unfortunately just prior to the commencement of the evening- service there was a heavy shower of rain, which no doubt prevented the church being crowded, as is generally the case on these occasions. The preacher gave a forcible discourse tm the wor ls "The Lord shall give strength unto His people, the Lord shall give His people the blessing of peace." The Magnificat aria, Nunc Dimittis, was sung to Tours in F, the anthem being "B1 ssed be the God and Father'' (Wesley), a rather difficult work, which few choirs.attempt. The rendering was both expressive and devoliona 1 ; in fact, the whole evening •ervicc was most impressive. A memorable servicu concluded with the choir and clergy passing down the main aisle and singing the Reeessii na! hymn, "The Church's one foundation." after which thv oru-f;- I j sl piajed the lial U1 ( j hq i'ufrom .no Messiah. Tlie afternoon service was for men only. The Rev. Mr Faveli, who has had considerable experience in connection with work amongst men in England, gave a straight man'y address, ,vhioh was listened to with evident interest by those present.
