SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Taranaki Coiunty Council was held on Monday, j.-rt-scuti; Crs. Brown and Andrews, and decided to vote for Burgess (Egmunt County Council) as tu c lepieseniatives of tne Joint councils on the Hospital and Cnarituble Aiu Board. I'fio -onorarium of the late Chairman was fixed at £52, and the honorarium tor Mr Brown, after discussion, was .eft until tne end of the year.

ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting the Clerk, Mr R. Ellis, presided called fjr nominations tor tne position of cuairinan. Cr. Hill said he had noticed a newspaper paragraph that Mr Tate aid not seeik re-election, bu'* as he now learned that the chairman desired to continue in office in order to see present contracts completed, and lie had pleasure in again nominating lum.
Cr. Hopson said he had been under the impression teat the chairman declined re-election, and' nominated Cr. Brown as chairman. The nomination was seconded by Cr. Stevens, who said he wanted to see a presiding officer more conversant with county affairs and who could carry on the meetings -with a swing. Cr. Hill said he was duty bound to vole for his riding colleague, Mr Tate. Several councillors deprecated the introduction of riding v. riding element. C" Brown, 111 acccpling nomination, said he was not anxious for th e position, and did not know 'that lie was any better than Mr Tate as chairman.
Cr. Tato left the matter in the hands of the Council, giving a froe hand. He was too old alt local bodies' work to take offence if beaten at the poll The voting resulted in a tie, Messrs Mil!, Adlnm and George voting for Mr Tate, and Messrs Andrews, Hopson and Slevens for Mr Brown. Tne candidates did not- vo'te. Lots wero drawn in Mr Brown's favor, and he took the chair. Mr Brown thanked his supporters and his luck for his election. He said that as chairman he would not take any one-sided vitAv of matters, and would nefc adopt or tolerate "riding politics." It 'was t]i c duty of councillors to consider the interests of the county as a whole. He hoped that if ever he trod on councillor's corns, ithey would understand his strictness was only in the interests of Hk ratepayers and to get the business of the council transacted as expeditiously as possible. He would do his best to fill the position wiili credit- to himse'f, to tho Counci' and to the credit of the ratepayers. Cr. Tate congratulated tho new chairman 011 .his election, and pro: mised every assistance.
