THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL.
We are indebted to the New Zealand Times for ihe following biographical sketch of the now Cabinet Minister's career;—
The Hon. Dr. Findlay is a nativeborn New Zealander. Born in Duuedin in 1862, he received the greater part of his early education at Scott's Academy, Hokitika. He matriculated in ISBI and commenced to study .law at Otago University, where- he took his LL.B. degree in 18S6. He was called to the Bar in the following year and commenced to practise at Palinerston South £ taking into partnership Mr F. G. Dalzieli. The doctorship of laws was gained in 1893, and Dr. Findlay, after spending a year in England, returned to the colony. Having taken political science as part of his law course and won first place in the colege in it, Dr. Findlay was appointed lecturer in that subject to Otago University. He accordingly commenced to practise in Duucdin, where he remained until 1594, when Sir Robert Stout invited him to join him as a partner in Wellington. Five years later Sir Robert was appointed Ctief Justice, and in 1900 Dr. Findlay invited Mr F. G. Daiziell, who was then practising in Otago ,to again join him as a partner. Early in 1904 Dr. Findlay's brother, Mr D| M. Findlay, who was then practising in Otago, was admitted to the firm, which now comprises the Attorney-General, Mr F. G. Dalzieli, and Mr D. M. Findiay.
When Dr. Findlay arrived in Wellington, there was no university college there, and for the benefit of law students ho conducted a series of lectures in political science. The fees charged were only nominal, and they were set apart to assist the funds of ike future college, then in contemplation. Dr. Findlay has. been on the Council -of Victoria College almost from its inception in 1899. He was twice elected as the representative of the school boards of the Middle District, and is now chairman of. the council. Ho has also served for some years on the Board of Governors of Wellington College. Dr. Findlay originated the Wellington Shakespeare Society, of which he was president for some time, and which is now the largest Shakespeare Society in the colony. H c is chairman of directors of the New Zealand Times Company.
Busy though lie lias been in his profession, Dr. Findlay has never been lied to it to such an extent as. to limit his wide reading qr to prevent him keeping- abreast with the politics and literature of the day. He has delivered many lectures oil social, political and literary subjects, which 1 nave been reported in the newspapers both here and elsewhere. He has also written to the Press from time to time a number of essays wherein humour and literary elegance have blended most happily. Few men have succeeded in getting through so much exacting professional work, and at the same time in keeping abreast of current literature on social questions of the day, and all the latest books on the principles of political problems.
