THE COMPETITIONS. South Taranaki has of late years been celebrated lor the Jiigli quality of its jumping cquines, and 011 Hie present occasion Ui e standard was well sustained. Tho jumping was excellent; better could 1101 have been seen anywhere. Particular interest was manifested in tho high jumping competition, which was an innovation in the programme and one thai was success! ui in a marked degree. Three lady riders participated in this contest, and their riding elicited acimiiat',oll. Th e winner, who rode bare-back, was Miss Maggie Briggs, a diminutive mite of about twelve summers who already has earned distinction in the jumping rinks of the coastal shows. Her horse Kttwhiti, a 13.2 hands Waikato bred animal, took the hurdle in capital style, and succeeded in clearing sft 3m, a luignt greater than the height of the horse itself. Miss Briggs also won the wire-jumping- competition on the pony, Czarina. Miss Campbell, the well known l'.der, and Miss Maggie Exley also .rode. The excited spectators thought there was going to be an accident before the horse had finished itsi mad 1 career, bui Miss lixley, who is a plucky ami capable rider, soon gut command, and steered him into the ring again amid the plaudits of the assemblage.
