OPUNAKE.
FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. The a.s. Muritai was able to work the port twice last week. A meeting of the Presbyterian Cnurch committee was held on Wednesday. The secretary of the Taranaki Presbytery wrote that Opuuake would be made a sanctioned charge conditionally on tne stipend being fixed at £175 and a manse provided, and that the Church Extension Fund would grant £3O if the charge were agreed to. It was also probable that a further grant would be made from the southern portion of tne Church Extension Fund. In regard to the manse it was stated that /150 would be available after the New Year from the Century Fund. The matter was held over until after the New Year. A meeting was afterwards held to make arrangements in regard to Holding a church anniversary. A large and representative committee was appointed. The gathering should be very successful, as greai intereft is being taken in it. It will bo the first anniversary that has been celebrated since the church was built about six years ago. The usual monftiiy meeting of the school committeq was held on Thursday evening. Mr Geo. Looney presiding. The headmaster's report showed that the roll number was now 94, and the attendance was satisfactory. Tne agricultural work is also progressing satisfactorily, the plot having been fenced and ploughed by Mr Geo. Looney. Messrs Mann and King kindly donated some boxthorn plants. It was decided to ask the Education Board for a new ciock for the infants' room, and also to 'hank Messrs Mann and King for their donation to the "farm." A circular was read from the Board in regard tj Holding a cadet battalion camp at Christchurch, and it was resolved that this committee trusts the Board will do is utmost to further the movement. The sports in connection with tne Schools Athletic Association ar- + o be held on Wednesday, December 5, and are exciting great interest among the children attending schools around about here. Smali boys can be seen everywhere training for 'he running and jumping events, and no doubt each school will do its best 'o gain the coveted honors.
