He was unlucky enough to liavc two gigs considerably damaged bitaveea> here and Opunake last week.

At the end of the proceedings the negroes felt so comfortable that they were sure the bank was alright, and tlie threatened run was averted.
Theie is an emporium for babies at the Exhibition, a lady being in charge ol this institution, and if tlie children happen to get into the ''lost properly" department they will be extiibited whore their mother will be able t u identify them. Not crediting human nature with the same maternal instincts as the brute creation, the Exhibition authorities have decided to number all babies taken in at the baby emporium, so that their 1 mothers will know which is which when they come to claim their own.

Religious (duration was touched upon by Sir John (joist (who was reeentjy Minister of Education in the House of Comnmsj iii conversation with an interviewer in Chiistchurcli. He said tlu-re were only two possible \v s.erns of dealing' with religious iustructiutt in schools. One was to teaeh 110 religion at all; the oilier to teach al; religious. People in England were trying 10 find a compromise that never could be found. 1 liey were groping in lho dark for a kind ol religious instruction thai would satisfy everybody. There was a strong feeling at Home that thcte should be some kind af religious instruction in the schools. The objections raised were purely platform and Parliamentary objections. There was no diflj#uhy wnutever with the teachers. At present the vast majority of the schools at Home gave religious instruction,

To make a casual promise to give anottier a half-sharu in a speculation and then to find the division to be worth a sum reaching four figures, is a promise that all men would not be found willing to redeem. But such a premise was made and redeemed by the lucky winner of the 1 "double" on the New Zealand Cup (Mr J. Heslop, of Matapu, South Taranaki), on Saturday last, wncn he received a cheque for £2060, half of which sum 110 immediately presented to Mr W. McL'Dowie, a neighbour, in fulfilment of a promise made when he wired his lucky pound away. Mr Heslop, wno enjoys the reputation of being one of 'he "whitest" of men, is a member of the Taranaki Land Board, and enjoys the distinction of having been a member of Parliament for one of the shortest periods on rocord, i.e., three days. He stood for the I'atea seat some years ago, was elected by a few votes, but 011 a recount being made he was defeated on tlie casting vole of the Returning Officer. Mr Haselden, his opponent, afterwards lost the teat over a technicality.
