TARANAKI HOSPITAL BOARD
The Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board met on Monday. Present: Messrs G. Tisch (Chairman), J. Burgess, C. Andrews, J. Blown, C. 0 Sullivan and J. 11. McDonald. BALANCE SHEET. The annual statement of acounts as received from the Audit Department was adopted, without comment. OPUNAKE AMBULANCE. The Hawera Board wrote that the total cost of the ambulance 11 jw stationed at Opunake, was £l2l 18., and the Board's share, a quarter of the cost, was /130 ig;. The clerk said the Hawera people were likely to make a fair profit, [Ol the public at Opunake .subscribed about .£6O. Mr Burgess undertook to make full enquiries at the next meeting of the Egmont County Council, and the matter was deferred. ENCROACHMENT FEE.
The Borough Council forwarded a claim for /li for the u-e of Tasman street, occupied by the Old People's Home. The Chairman said that it was intended to make an attempt to have the street closed, and the matter was left in his hands to deal with. AN INDIGENT PATIENT. The action of tho Chairman in sending a man from New Plymouth to the Rotoiua Sanatorium was continued. The Chairman reported that a Stratford patient named Radford, recently discharged from the Hospital, had been admitted to the Old People's Home. PROBATIONERS. The following names were added to the list of probationer nurses; — Rita Graham, Waihi; Annie Gertrude Luke, Waiongona; Alice J. Fisenden, Stratford; Elsie May McAllum, New Plymouth.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. Thu cnairman reported that eight tenders had been received for the work of repairing the Board's cottage in Barreti-streel. Tney were : (Coleman and Son £3l (accepted); J. l'etersou £32 io, ; M. Andrews £33 14;; R. W. Bond £35; J. Salt £37 15, ; A. Cliff £3B 10 , J. D. Smith /J3B 17/O; Boon Bros. 10;. The painting of the Old People's Home and the gardener's cottage was about completed, and the maintenance period on the asphalting contract would >oon expire. The Borough foreman, Mr Hooker, who had had considerable experience in laying asphalt, had been permitted by die Council to supervise the contract, and he recommended that the Borough Council be thanked, and Mr Hooker receive the sum of £2. The installation of the X-rays was being retarded greatly by the requirements uf the Borough electrician. First of all a stronger cab!'-' had to be procured than could be obtained loca'ly, and then Mr Black in-istcd on a double pole switch. When this was procured, he would not allow it to go in. with the result that the contractor would ptobably have 10 send to Sydney
for a switoh that would suit. It seemed Strang's; that Mr Black refused articles that were allowed by the Underwriters' As-oeiation in Wellington and Auckland. The delay was most annoying, particularly as tile X-rays apparatus was the gift of Mr Bayly, who was anxious to see it installed. The ambulance sulky had been -old for £l2. anil the litter was being stored at a ci»t uf £1 a year. The Chairman's report was adopted. OLD PEOPLE'S HOME. Mr Farrar, manager at the Old People's Home, reported for the month 1 hat there had been one departure (female) anil two admissions (one male and one female). Two deaths bad occurred. The discipline had been goud, but influenza was running .through the Home, probably on account of the changeable weather that was proving very trying to the old folks. There are now ill the Home 38 inmates, 31 males and 7 females. SUBSIDIES. The Treasury wrote thai the sum of the credit of the B'ouul, bring £.X? S/io, a subsidy at the rate of 24/ in the £ on contributions, and £ujj 5 6 subsidy at the rate of £ for £■ SURGEON'S REPORT. The report of the surgeon-acting; was that 27 patients had been admitted, 24 discharged, deaths 2, and 35 remained in tne institution. There were 20 operation cases. The Chairman said he objected to the extra charge by the doctors for lengthy operations, and proposed dea.ing wit 11 the matter in his annual report to be presented at next meeting. Accounts amounting to £lO7 to for tne hosphal. and /.Si j.y for charitable aid were pa-sed for payment.
