TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa." Rustique, who was reported to have gone amiss, is now alright again. The trouble was caused by an injury to one of his fetlocks received during the trip to Auckland. An Inglewocd sport had a nice little wager of 1000 to 1 about the winning double at the Christchurch meeting. Achilles' dividend in the Jubilee Cup was a pleasant surprise to backers. It is difficult to understand how the champion was allowed to pay such I a good price in such a small field.

Mr Dan O'Brien's filly by UhlanHeriot has been named Chamade, and the Uhlan-Grafton filly has received the name of Rappel. The sum of ,£90,362 passed through the totalisator during the four days ot the C.J'.C. meeting, which amount stands as a record for the colony.

In referring to Multifid's performance in the New Zealand, Cup "Phaeton" writes: The victory gained by Multifid in the Canterbury Cup was accomplished in such a manner as to strengthen the view that the son of Multiform had bad luck to lose the New Zealand Cup. J. McComb. who rode Multifid in the New Zealand Cup, is not given credit for high-class pieces of horsemanship; but maybe the fall-away on the part of Multifid five furlongs from home (and which it is held played a big part'in the defeat of Mr Dan. O'Brien's horse) was due to causes outside the jockey. The fact is, however, apparently clearly established that Multifid finished up his task with a great dash of pace, and he is given credit for galloping over everything when the race ended. That Multifid should win the Canterbury up under weight foj age, is convincing and in good time shows him up in the light of a thorough stayer, and it may be doubted if he will again get into the New Zealand Cup without an impost of iGlb under weight for age. A notable man in Melbourne is Mr John Wren (writes "Umpire" in the Sydney Referee. Rumour *ays he has recently purchased one of the Bourke street Arcades, and intends ' building a new music hall. In addition to running a number of pony meetings, he is promoting boxing contests and Sheffield handicaps. The newspapers haw columns of his advertisements. At the Exhibition grounds he had an a'hletic carnival on Saturday night, where running and walking contests were going under electric light. The sprint running ground is equipped with the latest automtaic judging apparatus, and the arrangements were very complete. There were lots of people there, and would have been lots more but that there was an icy-cold wind blowing. There were band contests in progress, and a concert going at the same time. The proprietor was evidently determined to compete with the V.R.C. for the patronage of the visitors to Melbourne at the festive season.

The attendance at the spring meetin? of the Auckland Racing Club is stated to have been very small and various reasons have been aligned as io the cause, one being the Club's ruling in regard to bookmakers; the totalisator returns, however, show an increase of £2288 over last year's figures. ________
