Mr McNab. and Messrs Arnoid and flanan, M.'sH.K., visited the buiiding' in the afternoon, and wcro shown over them by Mayor Scandrett and boxough councillors. in the evening, the timction was principally choral, pnd went exceedingly wel., the actoustics proving good. The Mayor .presented Lord Plunket with a hand some gold key, and asked him to J_ejdarc the building open for public .use. His ExceLency, in doing so, commended the enterprise of the citizens. There might be sjme who considered the building pretentious, j>ut there was every indication that the town and district was pro-pering, and that it would before long be fully, required. Sir Joseph Ward abo spoke in praise of the buildings, de precating faint heartedae-s in the matter of cost in a town that v> aJniund to go ahead. The hal. proper faces Tay street, end stands on a section given to the Corporation some years agj by the .Government. It has a highly ornate iacade, contains ample accommoda tion for the transaction of the town s business, council hall, retiring r>!'m- ; Victoria Hall, to seat 400, with kitfhen and supper room. The theatre ht the rear can be entered through the Town Hail, but is well detached from it. U has al-o an entirely in dependent access. It is a lofty plain jbuilding, seated for over 1000, fitted j»ith electric and gaslight, water service, and numerous fire escapes. The tie station is on the same area, facing £sk street.
