FARM AND DAIRY NOTES.

A NEW ERA FOR DAIRYMEN. Farmers who have put in milking machines this season sei-m wed satistied nth the re>ults they are obtaining. The machines aie past the experimental stage, and must now be taken into serious account by dairymen.

Speaking to Mr T. L. Jol! ; of Okaii awa, the largest private butter and cheesemaker in the colony, the other day, ,1 News man asceitaincd that mose of Mr Joll's supplms who have gone in for the machines arc delighted wi»h them. "I hope to see,'' said Mr Joj., ''machines on marly evciy farm in my di-trict ncx> year.' 1 The cows, he says, take readily to the machines; in fact, they appear to uke the machine* better 'ban the handmilking, and so far as the tests are concerned there i- no diminution at ail in the machine a!tide, and equally good results are being Mt-ured" wherever the machine* are employed. \V.th the .mroduction of the machines, commences a new era in dairying. Farmers will be able to r.d themselves of child labour (which will be a great blessing) and conduct operations themselves where they are now working on shares pr.nciple. The machine-, in fact, will put the industry on a sound economic basis for 'he fir»t time, and allow of good profits Ijemgmade out of dairying even when r.he prices n<w ruling recede to a much smaller point.

Many canny farmers are holing off the machines th:s year, and are closely watching operations at tho.r neighbor-' places. It is pretty safe to say that a b g proportion of them will not be on the watching game next year. It i- sta : --il that a fanner in the ttaipuku district, of considerable engineering atta.nments, who has been responsible for seme of the improvements on the present milking machines, 1- engage on a new machine from which big things are expected by those who are acquainted w ; th the inventor's operations. It is only a matter of a little time when the milk ng machine w.ll be made absolutely perfect, but in the meantime farmers would be well advsed to study carefully what the present machines are doing.
