FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. Mr T. J. Smith, who has been ill for 9ome t me past, i>, I am plea-ed to say, tecovering, and will be about aga n shortly. 1 understand that Mr T. P. Hugh--cn, who has been running the mail coaches for some time past, has not been succes-ful in obtaining the newmail contract, which has been sccun'd by Mr \V. Jury, of the Masonic Stab.es. New Plymouth. The service as ma ntained by Mr Hughson has been most efficient, schedule time be;ng invariably maintained. While on the subject of the coach scrv ce :t -ecms a p ty that arrangement could not be made by Hie Department for the coach to arrive in town a few minutes earlier so as to connect with the mid-day tra n for Wanganu:. At present settlers th s side of Opunakc wishing to travel down the line cm only get as far as Hawera bv the evening train, whereas if the coach were about 15 m nutcearller it would be possible to travel as far as Wanganui the same day. The weather on Wednesday last was very threatening; nevertheless, the Weslevan Sunday School picnic was held n Ravner's paddock and proved most enjoyable. There was a large attendance of children and games and races were the order of the day. The rain wh ch set in late in the afternoon Buramanly closed the picnic, and also caused the anniversary concert to be postponed until the following evening On the Thursday evening the weather was p«rfca and there was a large attendance at the concert. Mr Hughson, -uperlntendent, presided. The proceed ngs were opened by the childrei marching in singing, "Behold the armv of the Sunday School''; piano due'. Mrs Fo-ton and Miss Alice Hughson; rectation, Magnus Hughson ; recitation,. ''Temperance Coast Guards," boys in character; orchestral selection, Mi-s Hughson (p ano), Mrs Foston and Mr G. Hughson (violins); recitation. Mr Morgan; piano solo, Ms* Mary Hughson. Several action «ongs were nicely rendered by the children. During the evening the prize' w're pre ca:ed, a nee selcc!on of books being given. Mrs Robertson's special pr ze- for the best K i:l and bov were won by Alee Hughson and Albert Raynor. The report piesented during the evening showed a credit balance of £2 17. Rev. Foston gave an addrc-s on SundaySchool work. Mrs Foston accompan ed the songs. On Thursday even ng the inwallalon ceremonv in connection with Ledge Ikaroa lakes place. A number of vis ting brethren are expected. On Friday,' November oth. the local Rifle Club hold the r annua! picnic at the range, when a match will be fi : ed w:h the New Plymouth Guards. The vs tors are to be entertained at dinner and a social in the evening wi 1 wind up the day.
