COUfiT'S DUTY RESPECTING LUMP SUMS. TEH PRESS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, November 6. At a sitting of tho Arbitration Court to-day in the case of Hughes t. the tJnion S.S. Company, in which the company expressed its willingness to pay the balance due in a lump sure, .vlr Justice Chapman said that where the payments of 11 lump sum were concerned it was the duty of the Court to investigate the matter of investment. Counsel said the money would go in. J maintaining Hughes and nis family. Mr Justice Chapman reiterated his View that it was tho duty of the Court to enquire into the nature of the investments wheneyer any were to be made in respect of lump sums by way of compensation.
