Tue Hon, J Carroll is making progress towards recovery. The Native Minister lias hud a rather severe illness, suffering from pneumonia, and requiring the attendance ofi two medical men.

The following are amongst the visitors at White Hurt Hotel at present : Miss Cooper, Messrs fcilevensou, Pnrteous, Flyuu, MeGinty, Moore (Wellington), Mrs lulliek Gijjg, Way. Taylor (Auckland), Crease, Mrs Kantiers, Miss Emily (VVanganui), Mr and Mrs Falkuer (l'aliuerstou North). At Carterton, on Thursday last, Mrs McPartland, relict of the late Geo. McPartland early pionccis- of the Wairarapa d strict, passed away. i Deceased was a well known identity in Taranaki. The late Mr McPartland

saw active service in the India and Chinese wars. A very old and esteemed resident in the poison of Mrs James Hempton pas-cd away on Sunday evening, after a short illness from pneumonia. The deceased lady came to New Plymouth in IS7O. and has enjoyed the acquaintance of many friends, particularly in musical circles. She was predeceased about 13 years ago by her husband, Mr James Hempton, a son of the late Captain Hempton. She leaves two chi'dren, a grl and a boy. Mrs Hempton will long be remembered by many of the rising generation as a brilliant pianist, and a most successful teacher.
