NEW YORK GOVERNORSHIP.

MR HEARST'S CANDIDATURE. DENOUNCED 15Y THE PRESIDENT. New York, November 2. Mr Elihu Root, speaking at Urtica oo behalf of President Roosevelt, fiercely denounced Mr Hearst as an insincere, self-seeking demagogue. (Newspapers have exposed a compact between W. R. Hearst and the Tammany Boss, to give Tammany 10 judgeships in the event of Hearst being elected.) A TERRIBLE ARRAIGNMENT. HEARST S DEFEAT PROBABLE. ROOSEVELT'S ACTION APPLAUDED.

Received 4th, 4.52 p.m. New York, November 3. President Roosevelt's unprecedented intervention in the New York State election campaign is Lkely to cause Mr Hearst's defeat. The Hon. Elihu Root's terrible arraignment of Hearst for sowing the seeds of class hatred, fomenting discontent, and inciting the men who murdered President McKinley, caused a tremendous sensation. Almost all the New York journals enthusiastically applaud President Roosevelt's impressive and startling note of warning.

It was reported in August that Mr Hearst had disavowed the proferred support of Tammany in his candidature for the Governorship of New York, a post once held by Mr Roosevelt. Subsequently, however, the newspapers reported an alliance between Mr Hearst and Mr Murphy, a prominent Tammany leader, in connection with which some extraordinary scenes were said to have taken place, a serious Democratic split being expected as a consequence. Mr Hearst relies on public ownership as a cure for the tyranny of trusts. He considers that Europe has shown that such ownership is a success, and to that extent is more regardful than the American Government of the people's interests. The New York correspondent of The Times, in a communication to that journal, shows that Mr Bryan's chance of being elected to the Presidency depends upan Mr Hearst's success in the contest for the State Governorship, which would enable Mr Bryan to win NewYork State. Mr Hearst's opponent, nominated by the Republican party, is Mr Charleß Hughes, a lawyer practising in New York. He was selected as the Republican candidate for the New York Mayoralty last year, but declined to stand.
