Once again the New Zealand Cup has come around, and sportsmen throughout the colony will have then thoughts, if not their interest centred at Riccarton to-day. The b:g race this year presents a considerable amount of interest to local sports >ij that the- two favourites are owned and trained in New Plymouth. Waitara aleo has its candidate in Star Rose and from reports to hand the Waitara partv are very confident of success. When the weights appeared the race was considered a good thing for Paritutu, but since then various developments have somewhat altered this view, and at the present time the race bears a fairly open appearance. Although the Castor gelding has not
.lthough the Castor gelding has not jeen pleading some of tite Hack watchers recently he \vU be a difficult one to shake off. His weight is
the same as that carried to victory by Grand Rapids two years ago. Multifid appears to have made marked improvement since arriving at headquarters and the latest private reports state that the horse is doing all that is asked of him. Multifid
has the same weight and the same rider that Canlcen had when he stored in this event in 1903. Ghoorka has a handy weight and as he can be relied on to stay the distance should be close up at the finish. If at her best, Aimistiee will be one of the hardest in the race to beat, but
it is rumoured that she is not tjuite so well as she was a coup e of weeks ago. Martello is the mon fashionably bred animal in the race but has never vet been tried over a journey in public. lronmould's. form sincr coming to this colony does not suggest him to be a dangerous candidate. However to endeavour to anticipate the judge's placing I will select: — Multifid .. •■ >• 1 Paritutu - Armistice 3 with Notus as the ben outsider. The Stewards Handicap should provide an interesting race as the large field engaged contains most of the best sprinters in the colony and to attempt to find the winner is a difficult task. At least 18 of the acceptors appear to have a chance. My fancies are.
