Auckland, November i, ' At the inquest on the body of Alex* ander Crawford, an exfeoliceman who was arrested for drunkenness , n iTue-day and died in Mount Eden : Gaol, the evidence showed that Crawford was found in a state of hopeless intoxication, and was committed fop medical treatment. Gaoler Severn* said he thought it a shame that 3 respectable man like Crawford was sent to prison for treatment.. Ha; was violent, but required nothing. more than ordinary medical frea<-j ment. . He did not blame the police, but the system of sending people tq gaol for medical treatment. The madical evidence was to the effect that, death was caused by pneumonia and complications. The arresting. )onstable stated that Crawford was very ( violent when arrested, and it took;' three men to hold him to prevent him from injuring himself. The jury returned s verdict according to: the medical evidence, with a rider expressing the decided opinion that Crawford should not be remanded to gaol. They were satisfied that everything possiblo was done for him there, but the facilities for. treatment wers not such as the case demanded..
