COLONIAL SUGAR CO.
A FINE INVESTMENT.. Received 31st, 11.40 p.m. Sydney, October 31. At a meeting of the Colonial Sugar .Company, the net profits for the half year were shown at £111,074. A dividend of five per cent for the half year was declared. The report showed the Fiji crop was expected to be much below the average, and the Australian frop above expectations. The chairman stated the sugar production .would be practically sufficient for Australian consumption. As are •ult of the abolition of the South African differential duties, the companyhoped to obtain a fair share of the augar trade in those colonies The withdrawal of the New Zealand reciprocity treaty did not affect the present position of the company. Had the treaty been adopted, as proposed. they would have derived an advantage by sending >ugar to Auckland and bringing the Fiji sugars to Syncy; but the agreement was too one-sided to be a lasting one.
