LECTURE ON BIBLE WINES.
_ The Rev. N. A. Davis gave his lecture last night on the above as ad- :, vertised 111 the Baptist Church to an I- appreciative audience-. The Rev. T. G. y Brooke was in the chair. The lecturer II pointed out that all sorts of people S were now giving attention to the liquor ir question—novelists as well as clergymen ; he quoted from Hall Caiue, Coiilson, Kemahan, aud others. In the lirst place, if the Bible did in old times ~ pc.-mit the use of intoxicants, it would i-. be right to prohibit it now, under our ; e dillerent conditions He compared e 'he Bible treatment of polygamy and s slavery, which were then allowed, - iloigli we will not now allow such s thiu'ts. Tlie use of strong drink might ■- v c inic under the same category. But "' he said the Bible did, in the book of '" hsaiili, prohibit the making of alcohol. I 1 In some places where if appears to do j so, the reading is doubtful. Mr Davis explained in a very implc way Ihe ~ various words used m the Bible which .. are "wjne." They are so . many that we must be ,IV l " c ,v ■ontext. Referring to the jNew Testament, he showed that where we read "be sober" it should read "be absli- ,- iie-iil ;" and that Timothy's "a little •vine" was really little, or reduced ,- wine, there being no article "a" in the . original Tile foundation principle is, : ie taid, contained in the golden rule : - To do to others what we would they ! should do to us—not put tempialion ill 1 tl.ctr way; also to apply S . Paul's ; principle and abstain from that which is injurious lo others, and for their suites. 1
