Court to-day charged with having killed an infant named NeUie Smith, and with having made a false -f declaration under the Registration of * Deaths Act concerning the death of an infant named G'iadys Vera N'icholls, in January, iqoo. The child Smith died on September 16 in an emaciated condition from paralysis caused by having been given a 'lung f balsam which contained morphia an I L chloroform. It had been adopted by f accused, who had been paid £2O by the mother, a single girl. Robert Henry Wilson, an undertaker, deposed to burying a child from accuseds house on January 2o,th last. He ie- , jristered the child"s death from par-..-/nculars supplied by Mrs Guy. She fid him its name »a l Gladys Vera Guy, and that it wa? her son's child. All tjfe particulars she gave him cxccprthe name agreed with those upon the certificate of birth of Gladys Vera Reid Nicholls. Foster Guy, a • tailor, of Nelson, son of accused, stated that he had been a widower for over eight years. H? never had a child named Gladys Vera nor did a child of his ever die at his mother's house. Further h.aring of the case was adjourned until Monday next. pending the result of the Government Analyst's examination.
