THE OIL FIELD.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Re the petroleum industry, I should like to be enlightened through your columns on the following question: Mr Fair, the manager of the Taranaki Petroleum Co., has declared that according to his experience the present "Birthday" well will yield oil from 10 to 12 years, though it will not necessarily flow for tho whole of that period. The latest pressure of the oil at the bore is said to be i7olbs to the equare inch. Surely the quantity yielded by this pressure would warrant the immediate construction of refinery works Mr Fair has declared that the petroleum when refined would be worth three times that of the crude article. So, I would ask, why delay the construction of refinery works by waiting to ascertain wheth- 1 er oil will be struck in other bores ? ' I am, etc., G. H. STRIEFF. | Matapu, October 16.
