VIVISECTION SENSATION.
Toronto, August 24.
Something of a .sensation was caused in the section of physiology at the Hi tiah Medical Association here today, by the exhibition of two dogs and two cats having in their bodies transplanted kidneys fonneily belonging to other cats and dogs. These were regarded as marvels in surgical accomplishment, all the animals being in fine liea.th and displaying all the natural propensities of their kind—tho cats to spit and the dogs to growl. The surgeon responsible for this remarkable experiment is Dr Alexis Carrell, formerly of the University of Chicago, and now of the Rockefeller Ur.iveraity of New York. Dr Carrell, explaining these experiment, stated that one of the dogs had the transplanted kidneys for a week, and they seemed to be performing the'r functions sucessfully.
He further stated that he had already succeeded in keeping dogs alive for seventeen days after the operation, and that one of the cats had possessed its new set of kidneys for two months Limbs of cats and guinea pigs had also been cut off and put on again, the animals doing well afterwards. Dr Carrell was modest as to what he had hoped to accomplish by these experiments so far as human beings were concerned, but other physiologists present were very hopeful, though the problem, they admitted, was to get any person to consent to such an operation.
