I here were six events, including two tor jumpers. Several Cup candidates engaged in the Eclipse Stakes, and the Coongy Handicap invested these events with considerable interest. Results : Emo Hurdles.—Regret 1, Betrayer 2, Nigel 3. Ten Started. Betting: 2 to 1 the winner. Won by three lengths. Proceedor and Poseidon, in the centre of the field, got a good start: Collarit led past the stand from Ebullition, lolaire, Marvel Loch, Ellis, Emir, and Czarovitch last. Seven furlongs from home Collarit was a clear length ahead of lolaire, the others bunched. lolaire then moved up to Collarit, Poseidon going through the field to third position. lolaire and Poseidon raced round the turn together, closely followed by Collarit, a magnificent neck to neck race resulting, and Poseidon beating iolaire by a short head, Proceedor light lengths away, third. Time, 2.21f. Received 17th, 7-57 p.m.

Poseidon's victory in the Eclipse Slakes firmed him in the betting on die Caulfield Cup. Poseidon is now a better favourite than Solution, who did not start in the Eclipse Stakes, i'he winner pulled'up well. lolaire aas also firmed.

Hunters' Cup.—Whakataki,. 11.7. i, TIIO Dancer, 10.13, 2; Strathloddon, 10.13, 3- Betting: 3to 2 against the winner. Won easily, lime, 7.45. Coongy Handicap.— Demas, 8.7, 1; Mira, 6.13, 2| Bon Grafton, 7.5, 3. Other starters were: Fifeness, Melodeon, Ratafia, Misty Morn, Kaloomba, Charmont , lnvergordon, Moani, Dyed Garments, Orlms. Betling : 7 to 4 against Mira, (1 to 1 Melodton, 7 to 1 Demas. Fifeness was lirst away, and led from Kaioomba, Charmont, Mira and Demas. At the mile post Demas was second to Fifeness, but at the back Demas dropped to fifth, Mira running into second place. Dyed Garments led at the Home turn from Mira, Demas and Bon Grafton. Mira led into the straight, where Demas challenged and won easily by four lengths, Bon Grafton three lengths away, and Kaioomba last. Time, 2.22!.

1.40. Demas has now considerably brightened for the Caulfield Cup. WELLINGTON RACES. FIRST DAY. Per Press Association. Wellington, October 17. The Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting opened 10-day in ideal weather. The course was in splendid condition, and the attendance was excellent. those present including Lord l'lunket and party, representatives of both branches of the Legislature, and leading sportsmen from other parts of the colony. The meeting marked an important departure in the totalizator department, the machines being controlled directly by the club itself, and ran on similar lines to tho-e in vogue in the Canterbury and llawke s Hay Jockey Club Meetings. The new machines worked accurately, though not Willi that smoothness which comes by experience. The sum of £11,553, inclusive of the double machine, was put through the tote, as against for the corresponding day of last year. The amount invested on the double machine, Wellington Handicap and Flying, was £qqo, the winning combination, Clanchattan and Golden Gate, paying £55 131 on c ach £1 invested. October Hack Hurdles.—Pawa 1, Sardonyx 2, Cyrus 3. Rookby and llydioscope were the other starters. I Ivdrosope fell at the back of the course. Scratched: Armamento, Kuku, Lady Beresford, Highland Ming. WOll comfortably by nearly two lengths three lengths separating second and third! Time, 1.17 1-5- Dividends, /J-; and £3 3/Wellington Handicap.—Cumulation 1, Zimmerman 2, Ghoorka 3. Ghoorka was first away, followed by Boomerang and liourrasque. At the four furlongs post, Ghoorka lost this position, Boomerang running into premier position. Entering the .-traight, ihe field closed up, the colours of Mystification and 'Frisco being prominent. Zimmerman appeared to have the race in hand, when Ciancha.tan came through with a ratlie, and beat the colt by half a length. Ghoorka finished strongly, and was placed third, Mystification and 'Frisco coining next ill that order. La Torpedo was last. Time, 2.10. Dividend:--, /.S -/ and £1 1/. Flying Handicap.—Golden Gale 1, |)i- Wiite 2. Contender 3. Mungisia was Ihe other stiiiler. Golden Gate led praclically all the way, and was never seiiously tumbled i" the end oi the journey, ihe margin in his favour being a good length, lie Witte just beat Contender for second place.
